Model Upgrades

OpenAI has rolled out a big wave of updates to ChatGPT in July 2026.ChatGPT now runs on GPT-5.6, the newest model family. It comes in three versions:

• GPT-5.6 Sol – the most powerful version, built for hard tasks
• GPT-5.6 Terra – a balance between smart and fast, good for everyday work
• GPT-5.6 Luna – built for speed and high-volume use

This model is smarter, safer, and handles images at their full original size and detail. It also has stronger safety filters that catch far more harmful activity than the previous model, especially around sensitive topics.

ChatGPT Work: A New Agent for Real Tasks

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work, an AI agent powered by GPT-5.6. It can:

• Pull information from your files and connected apps
• Turn scattered notes and ideas into finished documents, spreadsheets, and slides
• Work for hours on longer tasks while you check progress and approve steps
• Run on a schedule, or start automatically when something happens

It’s rolling out to desktop first, with web and mobile coming soon.

Desktop App Updates

ChatGPT now has one combined desktop app for Mac and Windows. It brings together:

• Chat – for normal conversations
• Work – for research and finished documents
• Codex – for coding tasks

On top of the merger, the app got extra upgrades:

• Inline editing directly inside code diffs
• GitHub pull request reviews in a side panel, shown next to the diff
• Faster Computer Use, powered by GPT-5.6
• Support for working across multiple repositories in one project
• Record & Replay (macOS only) – show ChatGPT a task once, and it turns it into a reusable, repeatable skill

The old app still exists as ChatGPT Classic for people who aren’t ready to switch.

Voice & WhatsApp Features

Voice got rebuilt. ChatGPT Voice now runs on a new model called GPT-Live-1 (with a smaller GPT-Live-1 mini for Free users). The upgrade means:

• ChatGPT can listen and talk at the same time, so interruptions feel natural
• You get streamed text alongside the spoken reply
• Voice chats can now use web search, memory, and even images

ChatGPT is back on WhatsApp. It was pulled in January 2026 after a Meta policy change, but returned on July 13, 2026. Right now it’s live in the EEA and India, with more regions expected soon. Message the verified 1-800-CHATGPT contact to ask questions, send voice notes, upload images, and generate images, in many languages. OpenAI also brought ChatGPT to KakaoTalk in South Korea and Viber in select markets.

Document & Presentation Tools

ChatGPT now works directly inside everyday office tools:

• ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets – a spreadsheet-native sidebar for building, cleaning up, updating, and explaining workbooks
• ChatGPT for PowerPoint – create and revise editable slide decks, ask questions about deck structure, and build slides from repeatable workflows
• Sites – describe what you want, add your files or content, and ChatGPT builds a webpage you can preview privately before publishing

These work alongside ChatGPT Work, which can turn your notes and files into finished documents, spreadsheets, and presentations automatically.

Scheduled Tasks & Plugins

• Scheduled Tasks – ChatGPT Work can now keep projects moving on its own. Set it to run once, run on a regular schedule, or trigger automatically when a specific event happens or a file changes.
• Plugin Directory – the old App Directory has been replaced with a new Plugin Directory. Plugins can bundle together skills, apps, and ready-made workflow templates. Existing app connections still work as before.

Tutorials & Evergreen

ChatGPT’s learning tools got bigger too:

• Interactive Learning – for certain topics, ChatGPT can show a visual module where you adjust numbers and formulas yourself and instantly see how the graph or result changes. It launched with 70+ math and science topics, like the Pythagorean theorem, the ideal gas law, and lens equations.
• Study Mode – turns ChatGPT into a tutor. Tell it your topic, level, and deadline, and it walks you through the material step by step instead of just handing you the answer. It can use your class notes, textbook photos, or voice input.
• Quizzes – ChatGPT can generate practice quizzes on a topic to test what you’ve learned, working alongside Study Mode and Interactive Learning.

These features are “evergreen,” meaning they stay available as permanent tools rather than temporary experiments, and OpenAI keeps adding more topics and subjects over time.

Unified Search Across Everything

There’s now one search bar that looks through your chats, projects, images, and documents at once. You can also filter results by type, so finding an old chat or file is much faster.

Custom Instructions Got More Room

Paid users (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Education) can now write up to 5,000 characters of custom instructions, up from 1,500. This means more detailed personalization of how ChatGPT responds.

Older Features Being Removed

A few things are going away:

• Group chats – starting July 9, you can no longer create new group chats or join one through an invite link. Existing group chats still work for now.
• Atlas browser – being shut down on August 9, 2026, as its features move into ChatGPT and Codex directly. If you use Atlas, export your saved data before then.
• Older GPT models (like GPT-4.5 and GPT-5.2) have been retired. Old conversations using these models now continue automatically on GPT-5.5 or GPT-5.6.

The Bottom Line

This update turns ChatGPT into more than a chat tool. With Work, the new desktop app, WhatsApp access, and built-in document tools, it’s becoming a full workspace where you can research, write, code, and publish, all backed by the new GPT-5.6 model.
